Australia's newest PHEV wagon comes from Cupra. Is the Leon Sportstourer VZe a good alternative to the Skoda Octavia RS and the Subaru WRX?
Summary
Cupra has entered the niche PHEV wagon segment with its Leon Sportstourer VZe. It is a well-rounded alternative to the Skoda Octavia RS and Subaru WRX tS, though the VZx AWD petrol wagon would better suit performance-focused buyers.

2026 Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are growing in popularity in Australia, recording a 131 per cent sales increase in 2025 as more-affordable models become available in the SUV and ute segments.
However, there is a market in Australia that remains relatively untouched: plug-in hybrid wagons.
The Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe has been available in Europe since 2020, but it only arrived in Australia last year as the first representative of the long-bodied small car, ahead of the all-wheel-drive, non-hybrid Sportstourer VZx due later this year.
They join a dwindling number of small, sports-oriented wagons in Australia – regardless of fuel type – including the Subaru WRX Sportswagon (née Levorg) and the Skoda Octavia RS.
How much is a Cupra Leon Sportstourer?
Priced from $69,990 before on-road costs, the Sportstourer VZe is the dearest Leon currently on sale in Australia, above the $46,990 Leon S hatch and $64,990 Leon VZx hatch – with a build-to-order Extreme Package adding a further $7600.
An all-wheel-drive VZx wagon is due in Australia mid-year as a spiritual successor to the Volkswagen Golf R wagon, potentially costing the same as the front-wheel-drive VZe hybrid.
Hatch buyers can also look forward to the soon-to-arrive Leon Ve plug-in hybrid, which has a lower combined system output – 150kW/350Nm versus 200kW/400Nm – but a more affordable price tag and a similar electric-only driving range.
The VZe's closest rivals are the A5 Avant e-hybrid ($92,900 before on-road costs) – as the only other PHEV wagon under $100,000 – the Octavia RS wagon ($64,690 drive-away), and the WRX tS Sportswagon ($63,990 before on-roads).
Standard features are generous, including 19-inch black-and-copper alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, full-LED exterior lighting, a hands-free electric tailgate, keyless entry and push-button start, and an automatic parking system.
It is also equipped with an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated, auto-folding side mirrors with memory function, front and rear parking sensors, side mirror puddle lights, and illuminated front scuff plates.
2026 CUPRA Leon
Trainspotters will notice the Model Year 2026 (MY26) Leon now includes gloss-black side mirror caps, while MY25 examples – including our test vehicle – had gloss-grey side mirror caps.
The Leon VZe and VZx include a tyre repair kit instead of a space-saver spare, which is fitted to the Leon S.
A panoramic sunroof is available as a $2000 option, along with metallic paint for $620, matte paint for $2650, and the Extreme Package for $7600 adding Brembo front brakes, front 'CUP' bucket seats, matrix LED headlights, dark gloss interior accents, side skirts and an extended rear spoiler.
The Cupra Leon is available in 10 colours: Magnetic Tech (grey), Glacial White, Taiga Grey, Fiord Blue, Midnight Black, Dark Void (dark purple), Graphene Grey, Century Bronze Matte, Magnetic Tech Matte, and Enceladus Grey Matte.

How big is a Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe?
The quality of the Leon's cabin is great, with soft materials, a comfortable steering wheel, subtle copper accents, and a configurable ambient lighting strip running across its dashboard, which neatly integrates the blind-spot monitor.
Interior features include heated front seats but no ventilation, a heated steering wheel, tri-zone climate control with rear air vents, front and rear USB-C charging ports, and satellite buttons on its steering wheel for starting/stopping the car and changing the drive mode.
Front-seat passengers will appreciate the 12-way power-adjustment with a three-position memory function, which is identical to the driver's seat.
The Leon's sports bucket front seats, with dark grey part-leather upholstery and copper stitching, were comfortable during long-distance driving.
The Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe has a 470-litre boot space – accessed by an off-centre button closest to the driver's side tail-light – increasing to 1045L with the 60:40 split-folding second-row down.
As its battery pack is positioned under the boot floor, the VZe has less space than non-hybrid Leon Sportstourers sold overseas, which have a 620-litre boot.
The Leon S and VZx hatchbacks offer 344L of boot space, and 888L with the rear seats down, making the wagon a more practical choice for larger items.
Meanwhile, a Skoda Octavia RS wagon has 640L, a Subaru WRX Sportswagon tS has 492L, and an Audi A5 Avant e-hybrid has 361L.
A small underfloor storage compartment is included, which is handy for storing the VZe's included Mode 2 (home) and Mode 3 (public) charging cables.
The Leon Sportstourer is 258mm longer than the hatchback.
At 182cm tall, I found rear seat space in the Leon Sportstourer was generous when sitting behind the driver's seat set to my driving position, offering ample leg, head and toe room. However, there is a large central transmission tunnel for the middle-seat passenger to contend with.

Does the Cupra Leon have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
The facelifted Cupra Leon introduced a larger 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, replacing the 12-inch screen fitted to earlier examples.
There are still no physical buttons to control the air conditioning, nor the volume (aside from the steering wheel dial), though the updated software, permanent air-con shortcut controls, and illuminated volume/climate sliders at night have improved the experience compared to the outgoing model.
It features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in satellite navigation, and DAB+ digital radio.
Also included is a customisable 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with multiple display modes, including a satellite navigation map view.
However, all Cupra models lack built-in telematics in Australia, going without the 'Cupra Connect' service available in Europe with remote vehicle tracking and cabin heating.
The Volkswagen brand has introduced a 'GoConnect' feature for 2025 and newer models in Australia – but it is not available in Cupra or Skoda models, and it is an aftermarket solution separate from its VW Connect service offered overseas.
A 12-speaker, 390-watt Sennheiser audio system is fitted as standard delivering great sound.
Is the Cupra Leon a safe car?
A five-star ANCAP safety rating covers most Cupra Leon variants in Australia, including the VZe Sportstourer, based on testing conducted by Euro NCAP in 2025.
It scored 88 per cent for adult occupant protection, 86 per cent for child occupant protection, 82 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 82 per cent for safety assist.

What safety technology does the Cupra Leon have?
The safety technology in the Cupra Leon worked well – though the lane-centring function will often remind you to keep your hands on the steering wheel if it believes there hasn't been enough movement, even when your hands are resting on it.
The Model Year 2026 (MY26) Cupra Leon adds speed sign recognition as it continues its rollout across Volkswagen Group vehicles in Australia, but our test vehicle was an MY25 example without this feature.
Globally, the MY26 Leon gained front cross-traffic alert, but it is not fitted to Australian examples.
Its upgraded 'Matrix LED Ultra' headlights, which can now project welcome and farewell animations onto objects in front of the vehicle, are restricted to the Extreme Package for the Sportstourer VZe and the VZx hatchback. All other Cupra Leons have static LED headlights.

How much does the Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe cost to service?
The Cupra Leon is covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, along with an eight-year/160,000km warranty for the VZe's high-voltage components and five years of complimentary roadside assistance.
Service intervals for all Cupra Leon grades are set at an industry-standard 12 months or 15,000km, whichever occurs first.
Cupra Australia offers three-year/45,000km and five-year/75,000km service plans for the Leon Sportstourer VZe, costing $990 for the three-year package and $1990 for the five-year package.
This equates to an average cost of $330 per service under the three-year plan, or $398 for the five-year plan, lower than the Audi, Skoda and Subaru.
The 2026 Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe was quoted $2932 to insure, based on a comparative quote from a leading provider for a 35-year-old male living in Chatswood, NSW.
For comparison, the $25,000-dearer Audi A5 Avant e-hybrid returned $5121 under identical terms, while the similarly priced Skoda Octavia RS wagon and Subaru WRX tS Sportswagon were quoted at $2562 and $2196 respectively.
Insurance estimates may vary based on your location, driving history, and personal circumstances.

Is the Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe fuel-efficient?
During my week with the Leon VZe, I spent the majority of my time in electric mode for the commute to and from the Melbourne Drive office.
The trip computer listed an energy consumption of around 20 kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometres when the car was running in its dedicated electric mode, against its official 16.9kWh/100km rating.
Over the weekend, I travelled to Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, about 100km from Melbourne, to test its WLTP-rated 121km electric range.
Including some driving around the suburbs before I set off, I managed to travel 111km before the battery ran out (100 to 0 per cent), with the car automatically switching to hybrid mode, operating similarly to a conventional Toyota hybrid.
On arrival in Queenscliff, I utilised the Leon's 50kW direct-current (DC) fast-charging support to top up the battery, but with the seaside town's Chargefox units limited to 25kW, I only managed to add around 85 per cent after an hour.
This meant the electric range on the drive back to Melbourne wasn't as generous, and with no access to charging at home, the total fuel consumption for the week rose to 1.3L/100km by the time it was returned on Monday.
Plug-in hybrids almost never match their ultra-low official combined fuel combustion figure, which is rated at 0.4L/100km in the Leon Sportstourer VZe, in real-world driving.

What is the Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe like to drive?
Combining a 130kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an 85kW electric motor, the Leon Sportstourer VZe has a total system output of 200kW and 400Nm.
That is more than the 195kW and 350Nm from the non-hybrid 2.0-litre turbo in the Skoda Octavia RS and Volkswagen Golf GTI, but 21kW less than the Leon VZx hatchback.
Not all plug-in hybrids strike the right balance between petrol and electric, whether it be consistent power delivery or blending their friction and regenerative brakes, but the Leon VZe – and by extension, the VW Group's updated 1.5-litre PHEV system – is one of the finer examples.
Its petrol engine fires to life to build power when needed, with smooth shifts from its six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the VZe's electric motor is potent enough at lower speeds in its default electric-only mode.
As we've found with petrol-only Leon hatchbacks, the small car is one of the finest-handling models in its segment, with settled suspension, excellent agility around corners, and a nice steering feel.
The Sportstourer VZe is more than 200kg heavier than the Leon VZx, which you might notice if you drove them back-to-back at higher speeds, but in isolation it remains a well-balanced vehicle.
Without the added grip of an all-wheel-drive system, the Leon VZe's front wheels will slip off the line if you're overly eager with the accelerator pedal – due to the electric motor's instant torque – until you've become accustomed to how it is modulated.
A 7.3-second 0–100km/h acceleration time is claimed for the Leon Sportstourer VZe, compared to 5.7sec for the front-drive VZx hatch and 4.8sec (overseas) for the all-wheel-drive Sportstourer VZx.
During my drive to the Bellarine Peninsula, I was alerted by the Leon's tyre pressure loss indicator on the instrument cluster, warning me to check the tyre pressures.
After confirming each tyre was at the recommended pressure (38psi) at a nearby service centre, and ensuring there were no foreign objects in any of them, I hit the tyre pressure reset switch and, thankfully, the alert did not return.
Unlike many other cars, the Leon does not offer a direct readout for each tyre – it uses the ABS system instead – so I was unable to check which, or if any, tyre had actually lost pressure.
Outward visibility is good, helped by the wagon's larger side windows, while the passenger-side mirror can automatically dip in reverse, making it easy to park.

Can a Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe tow?
The Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe has a 1700kg braked towing capacity – 100kg more than the VZx and 200kg more than the S – and a 750kg unbraked limit. However, the brand does not offer a genuine tow bar kit in Australia.
It has a 395kg payload – the extra weight the vehicle can carry, such as passengers, cargo and accessories – which is a bit lower than non-hybrid versions.
Should I buy a Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe?
If a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle suits your lifestyle, the Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe could be a better option than the Octavia RS and WRX tS, especially if you can manage to shave a bit off its higher asking price.
It isn't as luxurious or as nice to drive as the Audi, nor as quick, but to be honest, the Cupra isn't too far off despite being $25,000 cheaper – and you're getting more boot space with underfloor storage, which the A5 Avant e-hybrid doesn't offer.
The lack of a surround-view camera, ventilated seats and telematics are far from deal-breakers – though they would be nice additions – and it remains a well-equipped package with decent performance, good fuel efficiency, and an impressive electric-only driving range.
Alternatively, you could wait for the all-wheel-drive VZx Sportstourer for greater performance, or opt for the less-powerful and cheaper Ve PHEV hatch if a wagon isn't your preferred choice.
