A surprise change in style is on the cards for the return of the Chevrolet Camaro, which has reportedly been given the green light.
The Chevrolet Camaro muscle car is poised to return in 2028 after a four-year hiatus, a new report has claimed, with petrol power and rear-wheel drive.
However, reports claim the reborn Camaro may be a four-door sedan, not a two-door coupe – a first in the 59-year history of the nameplate.
Company insiders cited by specialist website GM Authority claim the Camaro revival is due to ride on an updated version of the most recent sixth-generation model's 'Alpha' underpinnings, and is due to enter production in late 2027.
A separate report from industry journal Automotive News supports these claims.
The latest 'Alpha 2' version of the platform is used by the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans sold in the US, which offer a range of V8 and twin-turbo V6 engines, paired with manual and automatic transmissions and rear-wheel drive.
Among them is a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 in the CT5-V Blackwing, a relative of the engine in the final Camaro ZL1.
The new Camaro is due to go on sale in the 2028 model year and will be built alongside the next-generation CT5 and a future Buick sedan in Michigan starting late 2027.
However, GM Authority claims the Camaro may return as a four-door, although one that its sources say "will not necessarily follow a traditional ... sedan profile."
It speculates that a two-door Camaro coupe may still be offered, but it would likely need a convertible variant to attract sales from rental car companies, and allow its business case to stack up.
It would also depend on the other models planned to share its platform, and if the next-generation Cadillac CT5 adds the option of a two-door body style.
Regardless of the body style, the report appears confident the Camaro will return with petrol power and rear-wheel drive.
A move to a four-door body while retaining a V8 and rear-wheel drive would be closer to the two-door original than Ford's expanded Mustang range, which saw the badge applied to an electric family SUV.
