A new report from the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) based on used-car sales has revealed that more second-hand Teslas were sold last month than new.

The AADA, which partners with AutoGrab for its monthly Automotive Insights Report (AIR), shows that in the month of July, there were 1066 used Teslas that changed hands, split between 625 examples of the Model 3 and 441 of the Model Y.

While the total number of second-hand Teslas surpassed new-car sales of 917 units, more new Model Ys were sold (555) than used. New Tesla Model 3 sales hit 362 last month.

However, the significant drop in new Tesla sales in July, down from 4859 units in June, is largely due to a delay in shipments of the updated 2025 Model Y.

A decline in Tesla sales around the world this year has also been attributed due to CEO Elon Musk’s controversial increasing involvement in US politics, leading to global backlash against the electric-car brand in the form of riots, vandalism, protests, boycotting, and data suggesting owners offloading their vehicles at higher rates.

Overall, July's data reports 339,742 active used-car listings for the month, with 206,216 vehicles sold.

This compares to July 2024's 285,133 and 214,588 figures respectively, meaning more people are looking to sell, and fewer are buying.

Despite the drop in sales, July showed that people were selling their cars more quickly, with the average days to sell now listed at 44.6, beat only in the last 12 months by August 2024’s 42.7 days.

The top-selling used car sold was the Ford Ranger (5468 sales), meanwhile its new counterpart was the third most popular car in July (3930).

The best-selling new car in July was the Toyota HiLux (4676), and it was the second-most popular used car sold (4146).

Toyota made up for half of the top-selling used cars with the Corolla in third (2877), RAV4 fourth (2323), Camry eighth (1963), and LandCruiser Prado ninth (1890).
