Pricing for the upcoming 2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV has been sharpened, closing the gap to its main BYD Shark 6 rival.
GWM has cancelled a nation-wide drive-away pricing scheme for its 2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV ute in favour of traditional retail pricing, though the updated pricing has paved the way for more affordable state-based drive-away deals.
It means the forthcoming plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute – the second to hit the Australian market – is now up to $2500 more affordable than before, depending on the state of registration.
Australian GWM representatives attribute the discount to recent face-to-face discussions with its Chinese-based parent company out of the Shanghai motor show. GWM says the discounted retail prices are guaranteed for orders placed before June 30, 2025.
The model also benefits from five kilometres of additional EV-only driving range, totalling 115km (NEDC) on electric power alone.
By way of comparison, the BYD Shark 6 can travel 100km on electric power. The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV also boasts a stronger 3500kg braked towing capacity compared to the BYD Shark 6’s 2500kg.
Nation-wide retail pricing starts at $59,990 before on-road costs for the entry-level Cannon Alpha PHEV Lux. The only other model grade is the flagship Cannon Alpha PHEV Ultra which is priced at $66,990 (plus ORCs).
This pricing shuffle means more affordable drive-away pricing than before – between $61,490 and $64,590 drive-away for the Lux variant or between $67,990 and $71,090 for the Ultra model grade.
While the Cannon Alpha PHEV has been made more affordable ahead of its launch, the launch date beyond April 2025 means buyers cannot benefit from the government’s Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption, which ended for PHEVs after March 30.
GWM’s discount brings the Cannon Alpha PHEV closer in price to its main rival, the BYD Shark 6. The price comparison between these two PHEV utes is now line ball depending on the state of registration.
The single-specification BYD Shark 6 Premium starts at $57,900 (or between $58,789 to $62,725 drive-away depending on where it is registered).
Under the bonnet of the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV is a 180kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and 120kW/400Nm electric motor, good for a claimed 300kW and 750Nm combined.
The Cannon Alpha PHEV utilises a nine-speed automatic transmission and mechanical 4WD system with high- and low-range gearing.
Its electric motor is powered by a 37.1kWh battery pack, which supports DC fast charging up to 50kW max speeds.
The 2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV arrives in local showrooms imminently, with customer test drives taking place from mid-May.
