The Hyundai Staria people mover will add an electric variant, with the new addition to the range revealed at the Brussels motor show.

Rather than a dedicated EV model, the Hyundai Staria Electric will share its body and platform with the petrol and diesel Staria models already on sale.

The Staria Electric is powered by an 84-kilowatt-hour battery, with a WLTP range rating of up to 400km.

A 160kW single electric motor powers the front wheels.

The Staria people mover currently sold in Australia offers a choice of either a 200kW/331Nm front-wheel drive 3.5-litre V6, or a 130kW/430Nm 2.2-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder paired with all-wheel drive.

European market specifications for the Staria Electric reveal that two versions of the people mover will be offered.

The Staria Wagon will be aimed at shuttle services and mini bus operators, with a nine-seat layout in a 3+3+3 configuration, including optional seat heating and ventilation for the outboard front seats.

A higher-spec Staria Luxury will switch to a seven-seat layout in a 2+2+3 configuration, pitched towards families and private users.

Quilted leather upholstery and first- and second-row seat heating and ventilation will be available on the Staria Luxury.

Power sliding doors and a power tailgate will be optional on the Wagon and standard on the Luxury.

The Staria Electric will be offered with a single-tone black interior or a choice of black-beige, black-brown, black-burgundy, or grey-cream two-tone interior finishes, depending on the trim level.

The exterior design, while closely matched to that of the combustion-engine Staria variants, differs slightly with a unique 17-inch wheel design and a flat-panel black grille housing that incorporates the front-mounted charge port.

Hyundai hasn't specified charging speeds, but the Staria uses an 800-volt electrical architecture with a claimed 10-80 per cent charge time of 20 minutes, pointing to a roughly 250kW peak charge rate – in line with other 800-volt Hyundai EVs.

The Staria Electric will also support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power supply to run household appliances from the battery, and 100-watt USB charging in the interior.

Dual 12.3-inch screens for the instruments and infotainment replace the largest dual 10.25-inch displays offered on the Staria in Australia, backed by Hyundai’s latest ccNC infotainment software with over-the-air update capability.

A spokesperson for Hyundai Australia told Drive, “We are currently reviewing the business case for Staria Electric, however at this time we have no plans to launch locally.”
