The option to purchase Tesla's most advanced semi-autonomous driving system outright will be dropped in Australia in April, in favour of subscriptions only.

Tesla will soon remove the option to purchase its Full Self-Driving Supervised software outright in Australia and New Zealand, mirroring a move in effect in the US this weekend.
From 1 April 2026, an $AU149 per month subscription will be the only way to order Tesla's FSD Supervised, technology which allows the car to drive itself in most scenarios with the driver's hands off the wheel, but their eyes on the road.
Tesla customers can continue to order FSD Supervised with new vehicles until 31 March 2026, but they must be delivered by that date, not just ordered.
It is unclear what will happen to customers who place an order in March for a Tesla with the $10,100 box ticked, but who do not take delivery until April, but it is possible the technology may be removed, and its cost refunded.
Drive has contacted Tesla Australia for further details.
Existing owners of Teslas fitted with 'Hardware 4' cameras – Model 3s since its 'facelift' in September 2023, and Model Ys produced since late January 2024 – who are yet to buy the tech outright, can only do so until 31 March.
A significant portion of Tesla owners in Australia who have purchased the outright Full Self-Driving upgrade since orders opened in 2017 have vehicles equipped with less advanced Hardware 2 and Hardware 3 cameras.
These vehicles cannot use FSD Supervised on local roads, and Tesla continues to promise that as soon as the software is ready for Australian use in cars with the older hardware, it will be made available through a free update.
Similar moves to delete the outright purchase option for Tesla's flagship technology in the US were announced last month, and come into effect after February 14, US time.
Also due to end after 31 March 2026 is a current promotion offering free transfers of FSD or lesser Enhanced Autopilot software from an existing Tesla to a newly-ordered vehicle.
Much like the terms and conditions for regular new orders, customers eligible for the transfer option must order and take delivery by the end of March 2026.
Tesla says similar promotions "will not be offered moving forward."
