The second member of the Cupra Leon plug-in hybrid family is due next month, with the new, more-affordable Ve hatch joining the VZe wagon.
The Cupra Leon plug-in hybrid hatchback is set to return to Australia next month with a new engine, a larger battery and an electric-only driving range that has nearly doubled, but less power than its predecessor.
Priced from $62,990 before on-road costs, the 2026 Cupra Leon Ve hatchback joins the mild-hybrid S hatch, petrol-only VZx hatch and the VZe plug-in hybrid wagon, ahead of the all-wheel-drive, petrol-only Leon Sportstourer VZx wagon due by the end of the year.
Compared with the $69,990 Leon Sportstourer VZe wagon, the Ve hatchback offers 150kW instead of 200kW from its 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol plug-in hybrid system – but also fewer standard features.
It is an indirect successor to the Leon VZe hatchback, which was directly replaced by the wagon body style when a facelifted model arrived in Australia late last year.
Leon plug-in hybrids feature a new engine, a larger 20kWh battery and DC fast-charging support, with a WLTP-rated 123km claimed electric driving range for the Ve hatch – compared with the 11kWh battery and 67km range rating of the outgoing 1.4-litre turbo VZe hatch.
The outgoing Leon VZe hatch had an 180kW/400Nm combined system output for a 6.7-second 0-100km/h acceleration, while the new model has 150kW and 350Nm for a 7.7sec acceleration claim.
Meanwhile, the current 1.5-litre turbo VZe wagon – which boasts 200kW and 400Nm – has a 7.3sec 0-100km/h acceleration time.
Above the entry-level $46,990 Leon S mild-hybrid hatch, the Ve PHEV also adds 18-inch 'Garbi' black-and-copper alloy wheels – previously seen on the Leon V Tribe Edition – with a tyre repair kit in lieu of a space-saver spare wheel.
It also gains multi-link independent rear suspension, instead of a less-sophisticated torsion beam setup, and Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging cables – but upgraded seats and speakers remain on the options list.
The optional Leather and Sound Package, which is standard on the VZx hatch and VZe wagon, adds 'Moonslate' genuine leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Sennheiser premium audio system, and a power-adjustable passenger seat with memory.
A sunroof is also available on the Leon Ve's options list, mirroring the rest of the hatch line-up.
Cupra Australia has not detailed pricing for these options, but the Leather and Sound Package is likely to match the Leon S at an extra $2200, while the electric sunroof costs $1800 for the S and VZx hatch grades.
Larger 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive suspension and a 'Cupra' drive mode – standard in the VZx hatch and VZe wagon – are not available in the Leon Ve hatch, nor the extra-cost Extreme Package.
The 2026 Cupra Leon Ve plug-in hybrid hatch is available to order now, ahead of Australian showroom arrivals due from next month.
