Toyota has taken the lessons learned from rallying and racing and translated them into the wildest-looking factory styling package for the GR Yaris yet.
Toyota is set to expand the GR Yaris line-up in Australia with a new motorsport-inspired flagship version.
Dubbed the Toyota GR Yaris GTS Aero Performance Package, the new model adopts a range of body changes that, according to Toyota, stem from the model’s involvement in motorsport.
Despite the name, the Aero Performance Package won't be offered as an accessory to existing owners, but instead will be offered as a turn-key model from Toyota dealers, positioned above the GR Yaris GTS.
Pricing for the new variant starts from $64,990 with a six-speed manual transmission or $67,490 with an eight-speed automatic, both before on-road costs.
The GR Yaris GTS Auro Performance Package comprises a number of functional changes to the regular GR Yaris GTS.
The bonnet features a large cooling duct underneath, with hot air vented from an outlet at the rear of the bonnet, similar to that found on the limited-numbers, Japan-only GRMN model but is made of aluminium, rather than carbon-fibre..
Toyota says the modified bonnet design comes from its involvement in the Japanese Rally Championship and is designed to vent heat from the engine compartment during high-speed driving.
Vented front guards feature ducting between the front wheels and doors to expel accumulated air, which Toyota claims improves steering feel under heavy braking and makes corner exit more stable.
At the rear, a huge manually-adjusted spoiler can be configured to assist braking stability or improve high-speed handling depending on the set angle.
Toyota’s participation in Super Taikyu racing also led development of small rear bumper ducts on each side of the rear bumper, above the reflectors, aimed and smoothing airflow under the car.
Super Taiku participation also led to the development of a front lip spoiler to reduce front lift and improve overall balance.
These improvements work in conjunction with a new aero-enhanced floor undercover, which reduces the car’s coefficient of drag through the addition of a flat-bottom fuel tank undercover.
Toyota’s GR Yaris range now comprises the GR Yaris GT, GTS with Torsen limited-slip differentials, forged alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres, red brake calipers and high-performance suspension, and the GTS Auro Performance Package, which builds on the GTS specification with the new body changes.
No changes have been made to the GR Yaris’s 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine, which produces 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque, sent to Toyota’s GR-Four adjustable all-wheel drive system
All three versions are available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.
The GR Yaris GTS Aero Performance Package adds $4500 to the price of the existing GTS. Full pricing can be found below.
