An SUV sibling to the JAC T9 diesel ute is under consideration for Australia to compete with two-prong off-road line-ups from LDV, GWM, Ford and Isuzu.

"We're definitely looking to bring in more [models]. The SUV derivative is under investigation," JAC Australia managing director Ahmed Mahmoud told Drive.

The executive is believed to be referring to the JS9, an SUV based on the T9, which has been previewed for markets such as South America, South Africa and Russia.

International reports claim it measures 5200mm long, 1965mm wide, and 1920mm tall, larger than the popular Ford Everest and closer to a Nissan Patrol in overall length.

The JS9 is likely to sport the T9's 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder, eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive system, with a petrol option offered in overseas markets.

It is yet to be confirmed if the JS9 will offer the option of plug-in hybrid power, as with the upcoming JAC Hunter ute.

The JS9 may be joined at a later date by JAC SUVs on car-derived platforms.

“In the near future, we also have a plan for the new-energy SUVs without a frame for family use," JAC Global Vice General Manager, David Zhang, told Australian media in 2025.

The Chinese brand has had a slow start in Australia, releasing just one model – the T9 ute – which saw just 1582 roll off showroom floors in 2025.

The brand is pinning its near-term hopes on the plug-in hybrid Hunter, due in showrooms mid-year with the performance and range to rival the BYD Shark 6.

“From a spec, from a price, from a performance point of view, absolutely [it has the ability to outsell the T9],” Mahmoud said.

“I think it's the right technology at the right time… I've got a smile on my face because I know that we're working hard to make sure that it's affordable.”
